Bloemfontein is the largest city in the province of Free State but also its capital.
And since 1910, she is also the judicial capital of South Africa.
Bloemfontein and its metropolitan area has about 650,000 inhabitants, it is in the Motheo District, in the municipality of Mangaung.

The main language spoken in Bloemfontein is the Sotho (36%), Afrikaans (25%), the Tswana and Xhosa.

II. Climate and geography of Bloemfontein

Located at 1400 meters altitude, Bloemfontein has a rather temperate climate to semi-arid.
Despite the altitude snows are rare but not impossible

Winter (June to August), Bloemfontein a cold, dry climate, with frequent freezing at night, but thanks to the sun of the day, the temperature can heat the atmosphere up to 20°C.

In summer, temperatures are hot, often above 30°C but it is during these months that rainfall is most abundant.

Monuments

The major part of tourist attractions to visit are gathered on the main streets "President Brand Street" and "Charles Street".

- The town hall.
- The fourth Raadsaal.
- The Court of Appeal.
- The Supreme Court.
- The statues of Presidents Johannes Henricus Brand and Francis Reitz.
- The first Raadsaal: the oldest building in Bloemfontein.
- The National Women's Memorial: Memorial honoring 28 000 Boer women and children died in concentration camps.
- The Dutch Reformed Church with two towers (Twin spired) dating from 1880 is one of the most emblematic monuments in Bloemfontein.

Free State National Botanical Garden

This botanical garden is located on the outskirts of Bloemfontein, an area of 70 hectares, its fauna and flora are exeptionnelles. The Free State National Botanical Garden hosts nearly 400 different species of plants and trees, about 125 species of birds and 50 species of mammals.
The ideal time to visit this garden is between November and March, but the garden is open all year round between 8:00 and 18:00. A small entrance fee is required to visitors.

Maria Moroka Game Reserve

Maria Moroka Game Reserve is located 70 km east of Bloemfontein, close to the luxurious Black Mountain Leisure & Conference Hotel.
The park lies at the foot of the mountain of Thaba Nchu, and offers the possibility of many walks or game drive.
Tennis, mini-golf, shows and cabaret are also available.
Soetdoring Dam Nature Reserve

Soetdoring Dam Nature Reserve

Soetdoring Dam Nature Reserve is located on Route 700 45 km from Bloemfontein and extends over 7500 hectares. The dam provides the opportunity to observe Elk, Springboks, zebras, gnus, Kudu Impala but also wild dogs and Lions in a separate pen.
