Welkom is a city of 192,000 inhabitants, located 160 km north of Bloemfontein, in the municipality of Matjhabeng.

The name of this city means "welcome" in Afrikaans, after Bloemfontein is the second largest city of the Free State.

The economy is predominantly hard Welkom mining, especially gold and uranium.
