The town of Calvinia was established in 1851 by Reverend NJ Hofmeyr.
The first inhabitants populating the city was the Khoisan.

Calvinia is a town of 8500 inhabitants located in the Northern Cape Province.
The city is situated on the R355 road to (380 km away and 5h30-hour drive) of the city of Cape Town, west of the Province of Northern Cape, in the Namakwa district.

The main language spoken in Calvinia is the Afrikaans (98.4%), and the dominant religion is Christianity.

The city has four public schools, two elementary schools, one high school and one secondary school.

Calvinia is the largest centers of wool production, all of South Africa.

II. Climate and geography of Calvinia

Located in the Great Karoo, the town lies south of the Hantam mountains on the banks of the river Oorlogskloof.

Calvinia is 970 meters above the sea level

Coordinates : 31° 17 'South and 19° 28' East.

The average summer temperature is 22°C with maximum at 40°C.
In winter the average temperature of 10°C but temperatures can drop to -8°C, and the snow falls on the tops of nearby mountains.

The main roads are Nearby cities :

Nieuwoudtville : 70km west of Calvinia by R27.
Loeriesfontein : A 81 km north by road R355.
Williston : At 116km to the east by the R63
Brandvlei : 150km north of Calvinia by R27.
There are no agency rental car in Calvinia.

By Plane :

Calvinia has a small airport south of the city, but without regular connections to the autresville for your flights inside, it will go to Saldanha or Cape Town .

By bus :

Intercape bus company connects Calvinia in other cities of South Africa.
Bus stop on Jaagvlak Motors, Paul Kruger Straat (total station).

By Train :

Calvinia possesses a railway station but without service for travelers.

Located north of the city, in the Hantam Mountain, Akkerendams natural reserve is a great way to explore the nature and especially the 65 species of migratory birds.

Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve

The Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve is located 16 km south of Nieuwoudtville, surrounded by mountains and canyon.
The reserve has two main hiking trails for a couple of days (4 or 5), and two other daily travel.
The hike can be difficult sometimes but the landscapes are all beauties.

Located a few kilometers north of Nieuwoudtville, the reserve is home to the floral Nieuwoudtville world's highest concentration of geophytes.
The reserve is visited especially after the first rains in April / May
Great Drives pluseurs of days are also possible.



Tankwa Karoo National Park

Tankwa Karoo National Park

Tankwa the Karoo NP is surrounded by mountain ranges and giant Cederberg Escarpment Roggerveld.
No formal installation is available on the park, but the keeping of birds and mammals is facilitated.
