Kimberley is a city of over 170,000 inhabitants and the capital of the Northern Cape.
It is located east of North Cape procince in Frances Baard District.
Stretching over 104km ², Kimberley has 1800 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Favour to its mineral wealth, Kimberley, in the late nineteenth century managed to transform the agrarian economy of South Africa.

She was also the first city in the southern hemisphere to install electric lighting in the streets.

The main language spoken in Kimberley is the Afrikaans (47%), followed by the Tswana, the Xhosa and English.

II. Climate and geography of Kimberley

Located at 1230 meters altitude, the climate is rather Kimberly continental, with hot, humid summers (December to February) and mild dry winters (June-August).

With an average annual precipitation of 420.4 mm, most precipitation occurs in summer, taking the form of thunderstorms.

In winter nighttime temperatures can drop below 0°C.

The maximum temperature is recorded in January, with 32.6°C while the minimum temperature was recorded in July with 2.7°C.

By Car :

Kimberley is located at the intersection of Routes N12 (Johannesburg, Victoria West, Beaufort West, Oudtshoorn) and N8 (Bloemfontein and Lesotho).

By Plane :

The airport of Kimberley, the Kimberley Airport (IATA: KIM, ICAO: FAKM) is located 8.4 km south of the city.

IV. What to see and what to do in Kimberley



Big Hole

Big Hole

Close to Kimberley, the "Big Hole" is still the main attraction for visitors to this region.
The cavity famous five hundred meters wide that is located at a depth of around 240m was dug with shovels and picks by diamond miners.
It is known to be the largest man-made excavation in the world.

The Honoured Dead Memorial : this memorial commemorates those who lost their lives during the 124 seats in the Kimberley.

Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Gardens and Diggers Fountain : Memorial minors, or Diggers Fountain was erected in honor of researchers from yesterday and today.

The Market Square : The Market Square, next to City Hall and now a national monument, was the hub of trade in dry excavations.

Hill Memorial Square : This memorial was erected in memory of the death of the first world war.

School of Mines : National Monument, which now houses an art studio.

Don McHerdy Memorial Fountain : Memorial Fountain in Memory of Don McHardy

1890 Pioneer Memorial : The memorial is built of rock Matopos, the model looks exactly like the burial place of Rhodes. A map of Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) is imaged between the rocks.

The Honoured Dead Memorial : Twenty-seven British soldiers are buried in the tomb, which stood on the highest point of Kimberley.

The Mokala National Park is located southwest of Kimberley. The park is 26,485 hectares and has 70 km of roads. The main objective of the park is to protect endangered species such as Cape Buffalo, Black Rhino and Sable Antelope. The landscape consists of open plains, sand dunes and arid grasslands luxurious. The main activitées are the game drives and bird watching.

Reason for the land claim Vaalbos National Park no longer exists.
The Vaalbos NP is located in the Karoo, along the Vaal River near Kimberley.
The park there was especially famous for its wild animals, like the rhino, buffalo, eland, hartebeest red.
